about

The imagery in the lyrics and the vibe of the song was inspired by a trip to Brighton walking around in The Lanes in light, drizzling rain, looking at window displays and feeling in a reflective mood.
The song is directly inspired by a young couple that I met at a friend’s wedding. They shared their story with me and I learned that one of them was fighting a rare and almost incurable disease being constantly in and out of hospital. I was inspired by their hopes for the future and their optimistic outlook on life, even in the middle of so much uncertainty and not knowing if and when they would be able to leave behind hospital treatments and tests for good.

'Buddha on a shelf' is my debut single as Hannah Lou Larsen, since closing a big chapter with my former artist alias Asthmatic Harp.
I am so excited to share this melancholic, hopeful alt-folk song with you. I hope with all of my heart that you will enjoy listening as much as I have enjoyed crafting this autumnal track.

lyrics

Buddha on a shelf

Polyester trousers
Hanging on a rail
It’s a cold day in Brighton
People keep to themselves

Crystals and stones
Sticks and candles
In a window with feathers
Buddha on a shelf

I’d like to meet you
Outside the hospital doors
With a champagne and an all clear
You’re good to go

Bands on a poster
Names that don’t sell
Two out of seven
They’re doing well

Mention the rain
Only when it’s raining
Cause it’s too soon to tell
If trouble is back

I’d like to meet you
Outside the hospital doors
With a champagne and an all clear
You’re good to go

Pears in October
The wind in your hair
It’s a beautiful season
Leaves everywhere

Picture this
Frame us in gold
Maybe tomorrow
Sounds like a spell

I’d like to meet you
Outside the hospital doors
With a champagne and an all clear
You’re good to go
